Estate Planning as Part of Your Wealth Strategy

Tax-efficient wealth transfer is important to many high- and ultra-high-net-worth families. Whether considering lifetime gifting, revocable or irrevocable trusts, or ways to reduce a taxable estate, the Darrow Wealth Management Program offers individuals and families a complete solution for their strategic wealth plan. Darrow’s advisory team includes CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® professionals, a licensed attorney and Accredited Estate Planner (AEP®).

Collaborating with your trusts and estates attorney helps ensure estate planning decisions are aligned with your overall financial strategy, goals, and liquidity needs, including any significant changes on the horizon. As sudden wealth advisors, we understand how a major liquidity event can upend an otherwise appropriate estate plan and trust structure.

Common estate planning conversations include:

  • Ways to reduce a taxable estate (federal or state)
  • Revocable living trusts
  • Irrevocable trusts (including trust planning for qualified small business stock)
  • Retirement plan beneficiary designations
  • Options to bypass probate
  • Estate and succession planning for business owners
  • Lifetime gifting to family and ways to leave a legacy
  • Charitable giving
  • Tax-efficient wealth transfer strategies, such as the step-up in basis
  • Planning for inherited IRA distributions
  • Funding your estate plan
  • Periodic reviews after major life changes, legislative updates, residency changes, liquidity events, or just the passage of time

Frequently Asked Questions About Estate Planning and Wealth Management

  • Can you help me with my estate plan?

Our work is designed to complement—not replace—the services of your trusts and estates attorney. We don't draft the legal documents. But through our ongoing financial advisory relationship, we stay current on family dynamics, goals, and your financial picture. Collaboration helps ensure estate, tax, and trust planning strategies are workable in practice.

  • I have an irrevocable trust. Can you manage the investments and work with my trustee?

Yes, with the proper authority given, Darrow Wealth Management can manage marketable securities in an irrevocable trust. We can coordinate with a family member or friend serving as trustee, spouse, independent corporate or professional trustee.

  • Can you help me update my accounts to align with my estate plan?

A big part of the coordination with your attorney is making sure your managed accounts are aligned with your estate plan. We will prepare the paperwork to make these updates as seamless as possible for you. This includes beneficiary designations, opening and funding trusts, updating trustees, and attaching a durable power of attorney or transfer on death (TOD) to an account.
